To inspire girls to pursue Information and Communications Technology as a study and profession, the Industry and Innovation Unit within the Office of the Prime Minister on Saturday, May 4, 2024, commenced its โ€œGuyanese Girls Code Programmeโ€ in recognition of International Girls in ICT Day.

The annual programme began in Regions Four and Six and will see girls from seventh to eleventh grade participate in areas of introduction to Scratch Coding, Vex Code VR and Problem Solving and Design Thinking. Participating schools this year include New Amsterdam Secondary, J.C Chandisingh and Brickdam Secondary. Apart from the physical setting of the programme, the Unit will continue the programme during the latter half of 2024 with hopes of targeting more girls both virtually and in person.

In this light, the active involvement of girls in ICT will encourage and promote gender equality, economic empowerment, innovation, and creativity, close the gender gap in tech, and empower communities overall. The annual training through the Office of the Prime Minister is not only about technical skills; itโ€™s about empowering girls to become leaders, innovators, and change-makers in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. It also plays an integral role in achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are being supported, particularly in achieving gender equality (SG5) and empowering all women and girls.
The observance of International Girls In ICT Day is observed annually in April and celebrated under the theme โ€œ Leadershipโ€.
