ICT Basic Level Training for youngsters across the country
The Industry and Innovation Unit of the Office of the Prime Minister, has embarked on a number of Information and Communications Technology training for youngsters across the country.
The latest is a three-day introductory level information technology training to bridge the digital divide in Guyana.
Director of the Industry and Innovation Unit, Mr. Shahrukh Hussain said the course which focuses on how to operate a computer, software application and Microsoft Office, among other basic computer skills, caters for youths 10 to 18 years old.
“One of the initiatives we took on is to do basic level training. The aim is essential to build IT capacity among youths and adults to increase their level of competence with regards to the productive usage of information technology platforms and equipment,’ Mr. Hussain said.
He added that the programme, which began in East Berbice-Corentyne , will then move to Mahaica-Berbice, Essequibo Islands-West Demerara and Pomeroon-Supenaam, before heading to Upper Demerara-Berbice, then Demerara-Mahaica.
Mr. Hussain said IT literacy is no longer a luxury but a requirement that everyone has some form of IT knowledge, to efficiently function in an ever changing landscape.
At the moment the programme has already covered five areas in Region Six. In keeping with COVID-19 guidelines, up to 30 participants are allowed into the programme at one sitting.
Given the importance of building capacity in ICT, the unit will continue to implement initiatives, such as these which will ensure that every home has at least one individual, who has, at minimum, basic knowledge in IT.
